GORHAM Providence, Rhode Island The Gorham Silver Company was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1831 by master Jabez Gorham in partnership with Henry L. Webster.

The firm’s main product was silver spoons, although they also produced thimbles, combs, jewelry and other small items. In 1842, a tariff was passed that effectively blocked the import of silver products from outside the United States, which served as an impetus for the development of the American silver industry.Jabez Gorham did not take full advantage of this opportunity, but in 1847 Jabez retired and his son John Gorham succeeded him as head of the company. John Gorham was an outstanding visionary man, he introduced mechanized production methods, expanded premises in downtown Providence, improved design and expanded the product line.
